Hear From Our Founder

My name is Mrs Oluoma Agu, and I am the founder of Sarah’s House for the Needy Foundation. A vision that has grown over the years into a safe haven for those whose lives have dealt a hard blow.

At the heart of our work is a deep, unwavering passion to empower the forgottenโ€”widows, elderly women, and most especially, orphans and vulnerable children. Among all our expressions, Sarahโ€™s House Orphanage stands out the most. It is the soul of our foundation.

For over sixteen years, Iโ€™ve been committed to helping orphans and vulnerable children find their feet and rewrite their stories. But in 2024, we felt it was time to do more. Not just help children survive, but give them a homeโ€”a true home away from home. That’s actually our motto.

In August 2025, we established our orphanage facility in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, and that marked a turning point. We began going deep into rural communities, searching for the children who had been forgotten. Children living in heartbreaking conditions. Children the world had written off. Some were seen as witches and wizards, others had absolutely nothingโ€”no parents, no education, no clothing, no food, no hope. And we took them in, one child at a time.

Many of them couldnโ€™t construct a sentence in English. You know how it is in rural communities in this part of the world. Some had never owned more than one set of clothes. Shoes were a luxury. But we brought them in, and by Godโ€™s help, we began to build something beautiful.

The first thing we gave them was love and comfort; warm beds, clean clothes, and three meals a day. These were luxuries to them. Then we went further. We knew true transformation would have to come from the inside out.

We began to homeschool them, with passionate teachers who taught them how to speak, read, and write. We built a library for them. We brought intelligent and inspiring people into their lives. Slowly, the change began. Children who once looked blank when spoken to, began to engage. They started to blossom.

Some of these children came in sick, malnourished, and stunted in growth. Today, theyโ€™re healthy, happy, and full of life. Weโ€™ve watched them grow not just in body, but in confidence and character. Some of them are set to begin secondary school this September. Some now grant radio interviews, speak at functions, and represent the home with boldness and eloquence. We look at them sometimes and marvel: is this the same child we picked from the street?

We dreamed of this, yes, but God is doing far more than we imagined. Today, we have over 20 children in our care, some as young as two months old. And we are supported by caregivers and staff who pour out their hearts daily. We cannot ignore those who volunteer to help and also those who donate to the home.

If you ask what inspired all this, Iโ€™ll say it is Godโ€™s vision. A burden He placed in my heart to ensure that children who didnโ€™t choose their circumstances still have a chance at life. Nobody chooses the family or conditions they are born into, but I believe our choices can rewrite destinies.

I see a future where these children travel the world, speak at international platforms, and sit with global leaders. I see them as shining lightsโ€”rising from villages that the world may never know, but carrying a light the world cannot ignore.

And weโ€™re not stopping here. We are trusting God to do more. You know, reach more children, and also expand our programmes for widows and elderly women. Thereโ€™s still so much to do, and with Godโ€™s help, we will.

Thank you so much for thinking of me, and for seeing value in our story. Iโ€™m deeply honored and excited at the opportunity to share this journey with Sharing Her Experience (SHE). If just one life is inspired to rise and reach out to another because of this story, then itโ€™s worth it.

Thank you again, and God bless you richly.
